How To Hire Rockstars (with Jeff Hyman)

Welcome to Bet The Jockey!

Today I talk with Jeff Hyman, an Executive Recruiter with 25 years of experience and currently the Chief Talent Officer at Strong Suit Executive Search. Basically, his job is to find particular people to fill particular roles. Jeff’s also an Adjunct Professor at Kellogg School of Management. So, for those of us who can’t attend his classes, today’s episode is about how to find some Rockstars!

Jeff has a lot to say and covers ground quickly! He’s no stranger to rejection (at least 92 times by his own estimates) but after 3000+ hires and being a 4-time CEO, Jeff’s has rich wisdom. We talk about where he’s come from and the truths he’s learned as an employer and a mentee and mentor himself. Part of that is finding your own voice and do it with candor. Jeff is cut-and-dry and you’re gonna love it.

If you liked this interview, you should check out Jeff’s interview style: his Strong Suit Podcast publishes twice a week and I’d highly recommend you jump on. He’s the author of Amazon Best Seller “Recruit Rockstars: The 10 Step Playbook to Find the Winners and Ignite your Business” which can also be found on his website. He’s also put together a free video course: one week of 5-minute episodes (and he even includes interview questions). Jeff wants to get this content out there to help you find the best employees but also be a better recruiter.

Hope you enjoy!

Key Takeaways

  • Conviction and willingness to receive feedback will draw investors and employees alike.
  • Interviewing should incorporate into the process a way for the candidate to demonstrate the skills for which they’re being hired.
  • Candid conversations with employees give them an opportunity to grow. It can be crueler to leave them in the dark than simply breaking some hard truths.
